Work has halted on Thirroul for the time being, as It will be relocated to a new home at some stage, due to a change in personal circumstances.

But all hasn't been lost, with my three modules of Alice Springs completed and racked up ready for the Perth show at the end of May. Just some super detailing to complete and rolling stock to get ready.
These three will be part of 60 metres being displayed by our group, depicting Adelaide to Darwin.

A couple of photo's.
All track has been laid through Thirroul with only 1 more point to do into the coal stage. So the next thing is all the wiring and install of all the point motors. Once that is done, the control panel will be sent back to Control Panel Designs for a new face plate and additional switches added.

Whilst I was laying the track around the back of Thirroul, on the DARK SIDE, I was thinking of what to do. So after some research, I have settled on Wallendbeen. As I wanted somewhere to use all my grain hoppers and my S016 silo. I have started to scratch build the tall silo's that are behind the S024 silo. My S016 will have the additional cylinder added to it so its correct.

Attached a a few photo's and a video of the first test train. Enjoy
Tarana was assigned to the council pickup. tried to let it go to a new home, but there was only one person that showed any interest. However they seem reluctant to make contact to pick up, so I couldn't wait any longer.

The build of Thirroul has commenced
I have managed to complete the base boards and commence the track laying on Thirroul.
I still am yet to decide what will be modelled on the back side, but am leading towards a silo siding as I need somewhere for my fleet of wheatie's to run to and from. It won't be based on anywhere in particular at this stage.
Until the next instalment

Well another Perth AMRA show has come and gone, wallet's much lighter (as well as credit card - now to hide the bill)
A pretty good result for the group, with Deniliquen taking out the class 24 comp, plus another three minor placings in other categories. Unfortunatley, the diorama of the Roundhouse, didn't even rate a mention. Oh well, the feedback we got was overwhelming from both the public and modellers alike, so we will take that as a positive anyway.
Below are a couple of photo's from the show.
Who would of thought, that there was over 10k sitting in the roundhouse, with a mixture of Brass, kits and RTR loco's and well over 1400 scale sheets of corrugated iron, Thanks Peter H, very much for your efforts with the roundhouse construction. Woolworth's will be wondering why their sales of Alfoil have suddenly dried up!!!!!!!!

The future for the roundhouse, well I have decided that Tarana will have to go!!!!!! With the roundhouse area being extended into a compressed yard of Thirroul being currently drawn up.

So I have decided that Tarana will be sold off. If anyone is interested, please drop us a line to discuss. I can send photo's and a list of inclusions to any interested parties.

Until the next update
I have had a lot of time on my hands, due to being laid off work, but with the arrival of a new grandson, most of my attention as been on family matters.

I have done some modelling in that time, mainly installing decoders in some steam and diesels.
Decoder installs completed
1. Brass D50 (loksound V4)
2 Eureka AD60 (loksound V4)
3. Ezi kits Z19 (loksound V4)
4. Austrains C36 (loksound V4)
5 DJH D59 (DCC Concepts)
6 Trainorama 44 (loksound Select)
7 Trainorama 44 no2 (Loksound Select)
8 Trainorama 42 (loksound Select)
9 Auscision 73 (Loksound Select Micro)
10 Brass 43 (Loksound V4)
11 Brass 45 (Loksound Select)

I decided to give the Select's a go, since updating the Loksound Programer. The sound files of this latest version are in my opinion, the best sounding ever. Especially the Alco 251 and GM 567 files.
Once I downloaded them into each decoder, I sent a lot of time playing around with the settings. I am quite happy with the results so far.
Below are a couple of video's of the 44's and 42 running thru Tarana. (I do apologise for the quality, as the only tripod I could find at the time was a small one thats sits on the layout, and it shakes)

42 Class on the Central West Express, Sydney bound.

I also did some additional detailing to Tarana, adding some fences and other scene details, since the layout was exhibited in June.
The base board and main frames for Thirroul Roundhouse have been started by PH, and hope to post a few photo updates next week.

The other good news is I start a new job with Aurizon tomorrow, so I will now get to play with real trains as well.

Until the next instalment.
Finish is superb. Many thanks to a very well known Canberra Modeller.

Plan to add a Loksound decoder with multiple speakers and the correct Alco 244 sounds.

Current planning has begun for the rear of the layout. Considering switching to the south coast.
Thirroul Loco depot is the current idea, with PH already building the roundhouse and turntable area. The yard itself will be condensed due to the available space. The return at the front may lend itself to a representation of the viaduct at Stanwell Park if room and some engineering can be applied, due to needing to a lift up section to gain excess to operate

The Perth show has been and gone, both layouts did pretty good with 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 3 third places.
All concerned had a great weekend, and thanks to the Trainworld guys for making the trip across again, or their would have been nothing of Australian Prototype at all to buy.
Seems Perths love of pommie and US prototype is still strong.

Below are a few photo's from the weekend.
CPH 5 at Oberon station with a Flatop T that got lost?

As per the title, both Oberon and Tarana still need extra detail added, both of these will be done over the next few months.
Now that both layouts are back at there respective homes, what the future for them?
Well Tarana has been setup so that if Peter brings Oberon over, it will plug straight in and join up down the driveway, so we can enjoy running the branch line. Or we could employ time table running between both homes every second weekend!
Will both be exhibited together again? There is the chance that may happen in a couple of years, but not in the forseable future, as our group's aim is still to exhibit a different layout each year, with the planning for 2014 already underway of the "VR" prototype.

Until the next update.
Cheers
Progress on the main station building for Tarana has commenced. It is a A6 station kit from Modelsnmore. I painted the walls before assembly with some Taubmans silk - Lady in Red. I have still to paint the numerous detail parts, in a suitable shade as yet so hope to start the assembly over the next couple of days. After that will be the windows frames that will be painted white.
The only thing the kit doesn't come with is the glass, so will have to source something suitable for them.
Below are a few progress photo's.
Just a an update, all of the wiring has been completed, tested for operation. Scenery has started with the ballasting completed, and the platforms underway.
The control of the points is being done by a CPD (Control Panel Designs) which after a programing issue has been sorted out by both Brendan and Ralph from CPD. Their customer service has been second to none.

I came across a web site a couple of weeks ago, called Models and More, which had listed quite a few buildings for NSWGR in both HO and On30. They had an A6 station that was a good representation for Tarana, so I decided to part with $148.00 and bite the bullet. Tarana is based on an A6 but has a number of differences to the standard. I have started putting the kit together this morning, so will post a few photo's up as it progresses. At this stage I don't intend to modify the kit to be Tarana as it is prototypicaly, as my scratch building skills won't be up to it at this stage, and feel the compromise won't detract from the viewing or operation of the layout.

A successful test was run with both a 49 and a 421.
There remains a slight problem with the three double slips however, as the centre frogs are dead and need someone with some electrical skill more than I have to attend to.

The scenery can now start!!!!!
I will post up some photo's this week to show the progress so far.
Just a quick update to advise all that the beginnings of Tarana are underway. Base boards have been started and purchase of requirements have commenced. Still have to get a couple of code 75 catch points and all is good to start laying the track.
The control panel from CPD has arrived today, the cobalt point motors have been here for a week already as well. The only thing holding up a start is some free time. Will post some progress photo's in the next day or so. The intention is to give an weekly update from the time it starts to the time it is made operational, with the committed view of displaying at the Perth show in 2013, so I have 9 months to have it completed.
The base frame has been set up, thanks to Bunnings. I am using their pallet racking set to 900mm with the base boards at another 240mm on top.
Until the next update.
But 2 good pieces of news is at hand, with the new premises brings hope of a new beginning.

1. Plans have already been started for the NEW "Western Division". The current plan is for the site of "Tarana" to be built with the branch line to Oberon included. It will be 5.7 m x 3 m (not including the branch, which will be modules extending out of the shed into the drive way for running, expect it to be 4 m long x 1 m wide).
So stay tuned for more updates as they come to hand. There has been a "Last run Session" planed for the line before its closure.
2. The sale was also subject to the "Layout being included in the sale" so the line will live on with thw new owners (saved me pulling it down).

Catch you all soon
Those with a keen eye will notice that the sleepers are a little far apart for HO. That's due to the track being on my module for the Perth 2012 show. The group next year have decided to go left field and do some modelling in On30.

A couple of photo's of my first attempt. The track is code 75 for those that want to know. Yes I know there's a sleeper that's
Not straight. Well its a bush railway

Now the previous post advised that a direction change was on the cards to VR broad gauge and in P87, from the tried and true NSWGR.
But now that the major VR influence (JW) has departed for way north (not quite Alaska), the other major distraction has started off.
All the group members are doing a module each for a On30 layout for the Perth show in June 2012. All the base boards were prefabbed by PH so that they would all be the same. Everyone was left free to plan what they were wanting to do. The only stipulations were, hand layed track (including points) code 75, timber sleepers and a bush theme.

Well I decided to buy a couple of Steam in the Bush kits for my Shay and Porter. The shay has come along quite well today (nothing better than modelling on fathers day) well it is fathers day.

Until the next update.
Hanging around with Jules W has caused two more of us in the group to join the ranks of the insane. Yep we are also going to start modelling VR to both P87 and 18.37mm.

The condition has already started to appear with both Peter H and myself purchasing a couple of T classes and some rolling stock kits at the Perth show held on the weekend, from the Trainworld guys, what a great bunch of guys they are, hope to see them again next year (already started saving).

There has already been a interloper at Eugrowa, which was managed to be photographed.

The plan is to develop the still born branch of Trunkey Creek into a border town with a transshipment yard, so both VR and NSWGR can co-exist together.

No I haven't totally flipped out by moving away from NSWGR, just a better why to improve my skills more. (also gives the excuse to by more trains).
Set up went well with no major issues. After some heart ache late on Friday night with AMRA having a care factor of zero towards the exhibitors, Peter and Luke managed to sort out the barricading arrangements so that the Cockburn club could exhibit. This was something that AMRA should have gotten right. Apart from the usual bias in the judging towards member layouts, we did manage to come second in the "Jack Standbridge" trophy (as judged by fellow modellers). This was a great achievement for Rodney as this was his first layout he had built himself. Below are some photos. I will post up some vids on my YouTube page.
After a few bugs were ironed out we managed to get some consistent running done. Whilst most of us were running, two of the guys were playing Vincent Vangough with a piece of cloth that was 12 meters long. They made an appearance after a couple of hours with the finished article, the back scene.

We temporarily held it up in place, and its definitely looks great. A big well done to Peter.
It should look even better at the show with the water in place.

Also managed to shoot a couple of video's as well that I will post on YouTube.
Well 144 actually! After spending a week cleaning all my rolling stock and loco's for the upcoming Perth show, I was faced with the delima of transporting them safely to the show.
Not wanting to take a fleet of cases and having to wrap each piece in bubble wrap or keep in their own packaging, a better way needed to be found.
I came across a A3 size draw unit at Ikea for $220.00 that suited the brief, with the added bonus of being the exact height to fit under the lower level of the layout. The draws do not come out of all once assembled, which is great for us that are heavy handed or clumsy, no draws hitting the deck when pulled out to far.
To add dividers into each draw, I cut some strips of MDF and glued them into place. Once the dividers were set I then glued some foam trackbed (DCC Concepts) to both the sides and the floor. This provides the safe cushioning for the rolling stock.

The bottom two draws I choose not to do as these were at this stage for two Auscision Yellow boxes for the bulk of my locos. They easily fit in and with the space around the box I have used this for stowing some tools (saves another box).

"The block of flats (124 x rolling stock and 20 loco's)

All up the project has cost $360.00, but I feel that this will be money well spent. I have decided to call the unit " a Block of Flats"

Today we are off the do a total assembly of the "Hawkesbury" and test run every one's rolling stock. Hope to show some pic's of it, so those that won't see it in Perth can have a look.

Until next time, regards
